The Joy of being Unneeded

Psalm 50:9-12 (NIV)
9 I have no need of a bull from your stall or of goats from your pens,
10 for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills.
11 I know every bird in the mountains, and the insects in the fields are mine.
12 If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it.

I love this passage! How freeing is it to hear from our Lord that he doesn’t need us.   On it’s face it sounds defeating as we as mere mortals would say this statement to bring someone’s spirit down.  From God however it is quite the opposite.

He has no NEED of us, He WANTS us!

I was just telling a friend of mine how I went through a very dark time in my spiritual walk about 15-20 years ago.  Life wasn’t easy then and I was blaming God for everything that was happening.  My heart was frozen to His love and I blocked out any communication with Him.   The further I went into my black hole of hatred of God, the more things in my life got worse.  I almost lost my family, my job, everything.  Slowly God in his infinite compassion thawed my heart.  I began to yearn for Him again.   God didn’t need me back then, I am lucky that God is God and not man.   Any reasonable human being would not want me but God did and for that I am eternally grateful.

I need to memorize this passage and inscribe it on my heart.   I’ve heard Christ say that He knows the Sparrow, but God says here that He knows and cares about the insects.  The insects!  Millions of little bugs that we ignore and kill as annoyances and God cares for them.  How much more does he care for me.

I’ll tell you how much He cares, in verse 22 He says, “Consider this, you who forget God, or I will tear you to pieces, with no one to rescue you.”  I deserved to be torn to pieces for forgetting God, but He wanted me and now I stand a redeemed child of the King able to bless Him and be used by Him not how He NEEDS me, but how He WANTS me!
